Research & Development

At Toyota Research and Development (R&D), we’re working to build a future where everyone has the freedom to move, with a focus on vehicle design and development, procurement, supplier engineering development, mobility, safety, and advanced research. Centered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Toyota R&D has some of the brightest thinkers from across America dedicated to building the future of mobility where everyone can live more safely and comfortably.

Advanced Mobility

The future of mobility starts here, with research 20+ years in the future. Advanced Mobility builds sustainable solutions, manufacturing and testing five vehicles a day in our prototype facility and translates this vision into an action plan with the Technical Strategy and Planning Office.

  • Integrated Vehicle Systems - within the Advanced Mobility team, this is a key area that is looking for the latest and greatest talent, including Software Engineers. As a product development group, Integrated Vehicle Systems (IVS) supports the full production cycle, from research to production follow-up, of driver assistance and driving automation systems. Through innovations like “Teammate” and other advanced safety technologies, the work performed by IVS has directly impacted vehicles operating on the road today to enhance mobility and help create a safer world.

Product Development Office (PDO)

PDO leads vehicle development for North American-designed vehicles through strong program management with a keen focus on customer preferences and trends.

Powertrain

The Powertrain team designs and tests the powertrains of North American vehicles and new mobility projects. Our diverse team works on projects from advanced conventional powertrains to hydrogen fuel cells, battery electric vehicles and hybrid powertrains. The powertrain industry is changing rapidly and Toyota is leading the way with electrified powertrains toward a carbon neutral future.

Purchasing Supplier Development (PSD)

Leveraging the collective expertise, creativity and passion of our members, the PSD team develops and maintains a world class, sustainable and continuously improving supply chain that will help Toyota to meet our future mobility and technology goals.  Our purchasing members procure direct parts and materials for all North American-built vehicles from over 800 supplier plant locations.  PSD members are the conduit between our supplier partners and Toyota’s 14 manufacturing facilities, engineering and design, and other related divisions.  Our indirect team manages 3rd Party Labor, General Stores, Construction, machinery and equipment, assets and services PSD engineers partner with suppliers, developing and strengthening their product and process capability to ensure timely launch preparation, production and performance goals are met. Our busy team is vital to the successful launch and production of all North American vehicles and is well positioned to take on the sourcing of battery electric vehicle technology and support advanced mobility planning as Toyota continues its transition to a Mobility company.

Product Performance Engineering (PPE)

Our Materials Engineering group designs the raw materials used for vehicle production and partners closely with Performance Analysis and Evaluation to test the materials, strength and durability of these materials. Vehicle Performance Development conducts comprehensive research and evaluation of the vehicle, including suitability for North American customers. Quality Promotion advocates for its namesake internally and externally with support of field issues, warranty support and design quality.

Vehicle Development and Engineering (VDE)

VDE is the place where mobility comes to life!

VDE is composed of 4 divisions: Body Design, Chassis Design, Electronic Systems and Vehicle Cost Planning. In partnership with functions across R&D, VDE is responsible for full life cycle development of North American vehicles and systems.

Is there more to VDE than vehicle system development? Of course there is! Our team members are leading the way to find new ways to satisfy our North American customer’s mobility needs. Whether it is a software solution or a hardware solution, we have a proven way to cultivate your ideas and a path to bring those ideas to market.

If you want to be a part of this team, that’s great! We need talent from all disciplines of engineering. Come join us in VDE.
